Eco Tech: Lotus develops ESS to make electric cars roar

... dubbed ESS or Electronic Sound Synthesis that will enable drivers of electric and hybrid cars to select the engine noise of their choice.
The gadget collects road speed data from the car’s ECU and converts it into an engine note which is then pumped out through speakers in the cabin and wheelarches. Lotus claims that the system has been designed specifically to improve safety, for visually impaired who rely on the engine sound of vehicles.
